Captain Grey
Published in Hardcover by Beech Tree Books (September, 1993)
Authors: Avi and Charles Mikolaycak
Average review score:

The best pirate adventure since trasure island
This was one of the best pirate stories i have ever read. I think it is Avi's best book ever even better than Charolette Doyle. It is about Kevin, who is captured by a gang of pirates. The pirates kill his father and sister. He is locked in a room, but tames a pigeon to deliever messages. He carries on a conversation in this way with someone but he does not know who. The person is the most surprising part of the story. A great Book!

this book rules! (really it does)
captain grey rules cause it's about a really righteous pirate named captain grey it inspired me to right my own book on pirates

Interesting. Challenging reading.
Good historical fiction.

My review of "Fishing the New Jersey Coast"
I recently read the book "Fishing the New Jersey Coast" by author Jim Freda. Jim does a great job at explaining some of the best places to find striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, and other coastal species. I found the book to be very helpful in my pursuit of better fishing. If you are interested in learning more about fishing and how to catch the big ones, I strongly recommend you buy this book.

Fishing the New Jersey Coast is great!
I started reading this book to see what the author had to say about the area where I fish most. However, when I finished that chapter I promptly went to page one and read it from cover to cover. Lots of great info throughout!!! Anyone who fishes NJ should read this book! I will be refering to this book for many years to come.

A quality reference
Fishing The New Jersey Coast by professional saltwater fishing guide Jim Freda is a quality reference specifically tailored to help novice and experienced fishermen alike find the best places along the new Jersey coastline to bring in a fresh, tasty catch. Aside from a brief introduction to the art of fly fishing, the majority of Fishing the New Jersey Coast is devoted to very specific sections of New Jersey coastline fishing areas, from Upper Raritan Bay to Cape May Point. With its friendly, easy-to-understand advice and highly detailed layout, Fishing The New Jersey Coast is a "must" for any serious New Jersey area bound angler!

Greetings from New Jersey: A Postcard Tour of the Garden State
Published in Paperback by Rutgers University Press (15 October, 2001)
Author: Helen-Chantal Pike
Average review score:

Wonderful remembrances!
This outstanding collection brought back fond memories of trips to New Jersey many years ago. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down.

Postcard look at N.J. is coffee table treasure
From Sinatra to Springsteen, Princeton to Pt. Pleasant and all 121 miles of Jersey Shore coastline this book rekindles long dormant memories for those who grew up in the Garden State or were clamdigger wanna-bees. Helen Chantal-Pike mixes insightful prose with picturesque views of the Great State of New Jersey. This is a must have for anyone who has salt water running through their veins. Excellent coffee table book that you can come back to again and again. Can't wait until Pike's next book, "Asbury Park: Glory Days 1890-1980" is published based on the quality of "Greetings from New Jersey. . ."

Eat This Book!
"Greetings from New Jersey, A Postcard Tour of the Garden State" is a hefty, gorgeous book that feels good to hold in your hands. New Jersey is one of the great postcard states, and author Helen Pike, between two covers, has made quite a handsome sandwich of it. From the diving horse of Atlantic City to the dining room of the State Reformatory in Rahway; from Thomas Edison at his West Orange office to the cute little Campbell's Kids, the tour is a colorful retro-joy that calms the nerves and sends the reader dreaming. Advertising, manufacturing, main streets, parades, disasters -- it's all there. And it's m'm! m'm! Good! With each card, Pike supplies an appealing bite-size commentary. As if the cards and comments aren't enough, Pike's essays are likewise terrific. The introduction to the book entertainingly deals with the advent of the picture postcard in general and its importance to New Jersey in particular. A closing chapter is titled "The Delights of Deltiology" (the study of postcards) and is a really useful introduction to the various categories of cards. It is perfect for people who wish to develop an interest in collecting. In short, "Greetings from New Jersey" is a book to keep close by and pick up again and again. It's really good enough to eat (which is why I bought two of them). It would make a great gift for almost anyone.

Henry Reed's Baby-Sitting Service

Authors: Keith Robertson and Robert McCloskey
Average review score:

More fun from Henry and Midge
Anyone who has ever babysat before will be all-too-familiar with the trials Henry and Midge have to suffer through in this third book of the Henry Reed series. Keith Robertson does it once again with wacky babysitting scenarios everyone can identify with. You'll be cheering by the end of the book -- I guarantee it.

Great Fun!
This book, like the other books in the Henry Reed series, is very enjoyable. Kids of all ages will enjoy Henry's adventures in babysitting. These books are timeless in their ability to provoke laughter and create a sense of fun for the reader.

Great, fast-paced fun!
I read this book years ago when I was in sixth grade. The entire Henry Reed series is wonderful, and kids should have fun laughing at Henry's adventures.

In a Child's Name: The Legacy of a Mother's Murder
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (November, 1990)
Author: Peter Maas
Average review score:

Great true crime book
Peter Maas is a good, solid writer. This is the book that was the basis of the TV movie starring Valerie Bertinelli. However, there is much more detail in the book. For example, there is more of the background of the victim and the dentist/murderer. It also seems that the victim did use cocaine, although Maas does strees that it was only "recreational." (???--what is recreational?) Also, he admits that he beat her up in Mexico. It's a page burner.

Chilling and sad
I saw the 1991 miniseries of "In A Child's Name" before I had ever read the book, and I must say that, in both cases, I was saddened and angered at the murder of a beautiful, innocent mother and also by the manipulation of an innocent child, who was ultimately the real victim, along with his mother. Ultimately, however, I was moved by the family's coming together to raise the baby boy left by his loving mother and cold-hearted father. The book does go deeper into the horror of what happened after the young mother's murder than the miniseries. However, both tell the tragic but ultimately uplifting story about abuse, murder, cold-hearted manipulation, and ultimate strength and love.

A Must-Read
Entralling from the first page to the last. If you've seen the movie, DEFINATELY read the book. Michael Ontkean's portrayal of Ken Taylor is terrific. Being from Indina, I was especially interested due to the custody battle that came as a result of Taylor bludgeoning his wife to death. The fact that this story is true is what makes it so horrible. My heart ached, not only for the child, but for Teresa's family members who were put through not only having to deal with her murder, but the idea of her child being in the custody of Ken Taylor's parents. Louise Fletcher, who plays Ken Taylor's mother gives a chilling reference to a mother turning a ridiculously blind eye to the fact that her son was a manipulative cold blooded murderer with very strange sexual appetites (records indicated that calls were made from the scene of the murder to 900-sex lines while Teresa lay dead on the floor). A chilling account.

Killing Thyme: A James P. Dandy Elderhostel Mystery (Thorndike Press Large Print Paperback Series)
Published in Paperback by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (July, 2002)
Author: Peter Abresch
Average review score:

Very Enjoyable
Jim Dandy and Dodee Swisher get toget her at an elderhostel cooking trip to see if the magic they generated in their last encounter was still there.

Not only was the magic there but so was a host of murders. The curious Dodee and the hesitant Jim work together to solve the mysteries and get to know each other as well.

I enjoyed this book. The romance wasn't sloppy and the mystery was tidy.

I have to admit that I was a little bit reluctant to read this book when my mother handed it over to me. I didn't expect to enjoy reading about an older couple solving mysteries. What a pleasant surprise. I'm going to buy any other book Abresch writes, it was that good.

Cooking with murder
What a believable mystery. The characters are real and draw the reader into the story. The story itself moves quickly with little time for relaxation. The only problem with the story is that is kept me up all night to finish it, my boss was not impressed. But I was impressed with the book.

Expect the unexpected
Killing Thyme is the second title in the James P. Dandy Mystery series. The first being Bloody Bonsai.

I knew there was more to cooking than my mother had taught me. After this mystery I will certainly be more choosy about my knives and cooking oil.

Jim Dandy and Dodee Swisher get together in Baltimore for a lesson in love, cooking and murder. When they showed up at their second Elderhoster cooking class, they didn't expect to be in the middle of another mystery. But when the chefs start dying off, someone on the inside has to help solve the murders. Who better than Dodee and a reluctant Jim. These two are charming and work well together.

It looks like Mr. Abresh has found his niche. He characters are well developed and likable. His mysteries unexpected. Brenda @ MyShelf

The Memoirs of Bambi Goldbloom, Or, Growing Up in New Jersey
Published in Paperback by Fireside (February, 1987)
Author: Linda Sunshine
Average review score:

Fabulous!
A fast, funny read! I recommend it strongly

This is by far the funniest book I have ever read.
This is by far the funniest book I have read. The childhood memories that Linda Sunshine brings up makes me laugh, think of my best friends, and remember how hard it was to grow up, and how easy and carefree it seems now. I read this book all the time...over and over and over.

Hilariously satirical look at growing up a Jewish Princess
This book should have been a guide for women who grew up in the seventies.

Linda Sunshine brings out the loser, worrier, pre-pubescent, pretencious git in all of us in a trulely loveable character who among other things was in love with Prince Charles, had a friend with a Mary Tyler Moore identity crisis, sent her father broke, and married solely to get her mother off her back.

The character exerts the self-confidence of a lavishly-adorned princess, with the naivety of a sweepstake ticket-buyer who expects to win.

The Memoirs of Bambi Goldbloom is a hilarious look at growing up a Jewish girl in New Jersey in the seventies - and from an Catholic growing up in Australia at the same time, it is a refreshing, and sometimes embarrassingly-familiar coming of age novel. A bloody good read!

The life Bambi ends up with is certainly a surprise.

Night of the Devil: The Untold Story of Thomas Trantino and the Angel Lounge Killings
Published in Hardcover by Camino Books (February, 2003)
Author: David Stout
Average review score:

You won't put it down!
This book is riveting. Once I started reading it, it was impossible to stop. Mr. Trout really brings the reader into the story. Even though the events happened over 30 years ago, you feel as if you are there. David Stout is a real journalist. He brings the story to life, he is fair and balanced in his reporting. I highly recommend this book if you have any interest in crime, punishment and what's right/wrong with "justice" in America.
My heart goes out to the families of the victims.

The Ultimate Crime
Most of us have views about the efficacy of societal imposition of the death penalty for ultimate crimes such as murder or high treason. David Stout's Night of the Devil will will take you on the forty-year journey of a convicted murderer of two police officers, from the crime through the laborings of the state and federal judicial sytems, as they lurch through the particulars of this case and through the general evolution of our society's unsetteled position over the imposition of the ultimate sanction.

Written by a veteran reporter and author of several mystery novels, this story is thoroughly researched, dispassionate, and riveting. The author is from the old school: present the facts so that the reader can gain insight and form their own opinions. Mr. Stout writes in a clear, highly-paced, engaging manner. Few readers are likely to put this book down for long.

The Night of The Devil by David Stout
I am the sister of Gary Tedesco, the policeman that was murdered and so for me reading this story was very difficult. With that being said, I believe David Stout wrote this story with a great deal of compassion for all the family members and friends that will be forever changed as a result of this horrific crime. If you want to read a true account of the story that has been in the news for 39 years then I would suggest reading this book. David really did his homework.Everyone who believes hard criminals should be released into society again, should read the results of what allowing these two murderes into society time after time did to two innocent lives and the families and friends their lives touched. The two men who murdered them should never have been out of prison in the first place but one is now walking the streets with us again. The policeman got the death sentence and the families got the life sentence.
